Job Description

Position Title: SAWYER POSITION

Group/Unit/Department:  MBLC

Location: Madawaska

POSITION PURPOSE

To operate the Headsaw (Double cut band saw and/or Scragg Saw) in a safe and efficient manner to ensure that defined production targets and quality standards are met.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain a steady flow of material through the saw to maximize volume to meet production objectives
  • Maximize value through the proper positioning of logs to be cut.
  • Direct processed slabs /cants/ and boards to the appropriate areas
  • Monitor headsaw equipment for any deficiencies, report to maintenance when repairs or service are required.
  • Monitor lumber quality and headsaw performance and assist with saw changes as required.
  • Troubleshoot and set up setworks and as per sawbill instructions. · Assist maintenance as required.
  • Report any safety hazards to your Supervisor/Manager
  • Contribute and act effectively within the team

DIMENSIONS

  • Direction & Support: Works independently within a team and receives supervisory instruction or guidance in irregular or new situations.
  • Problem-Solving: Able to recognize and solve minor mechanical problems independently.
  • Authority: Stop material movement if unsafe conditions exist, and notify the supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Physical Efforts: Minimal effort; constant sitting, reaching for buttons and switches, controls with foot pedals. Occasional heavy lifting and pulling, clearing jams, and moving logs.
  • Physical Environment: Heated cab, minimal noise, and dust
  • Sensory Attention: Constant need for hand/eye coordination, close visual attention, ability to multitask, monitor flow of material through the mill, and communicate with mill maintenance.
  • Mental Stress: Moderate pressure from production flow and repetitious work.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Meet minimal skill levels for reading, math, and mechanical. Possess some knowledge of softwood and hardwood lumber grades,
  • Knowledge of or demonstrated ability to understand production and customer expectations.
  • Able to work with minimal supervision as an effective team member.
  • Demonstrated reliability.

Reports to: Sawmill Manager and/or Shift Supervisor or the Manager’s delegate
