Family Camp – An Experience For the Entire Family!
About Family Camp
For many years, YMCA John Island Camp has been pleased to offer a special week/weekend each summer just for families. The program includes all of the fun activities that YMCA John Island Camp is famous for: swimming, sailing, arts and crafts, rock climbing, windsurfing, low and high ropes courses, hiking, canoeing… There are daily programs for different age groups (adults too!), open waterfront programs, games, campfire, skit nights, and overnight camping trips. Families can participate in organized activities or relax and play on their own. Included in the camp fees are all meals, accommodation, and programs.
Age Specific Programs: Every family camper will be able join in an age specific program group that will participate in a variety of activities throughout their stay. Age groups typically span 2-3 years of age and the Adults group is 18 years and older. There will be four scheduled activities for each program group throughout the day, two in the morning and two in the afternoon. Campers are welcome to join in with their group, or families are welcome to participate in their own family program.
Family Programs: Families are welcome to relax on the beach or spend their time together throughout the day. Our John Island Staff are always on hand to help out at the beach with sailing, windsurfing or kayaking. Families can also sign our canoes to tour around the island or simply find a shady spot underneath a tree to read or play cards. It’s all up to you!
Evening Programs: Each evening, the John Island Staff will host an all-camp activity such as campfire, capture the flag, skit night or carnival night. Families are encouraged to join in on the fun! During the Fall Family Camp, on Thursday night we have the traditional ‘Kids Overnight’ and Adult Social. This allows campers to go have a night out in tents and have a cookout, while the adults enjoy an evening of fun in the Dining Hall.
Families stay in rustic cabins set among the pines. Each family group is housed in one cabin. The cabins can accommodate 4-10 people each (depending on the cabin). The cabins have bunk beds as well as shelving to put all of your belongings. Linens are not provided and families will need to bring their own sleeping bags or blankets. Cabins are also equipped with solar powered lights.
Meals are served in our central Dining Hall. The meals are a mix of buffet and family style dining. Families may choose to either eat together or mingle with others. Please indicate any allergies or dietary restrictions when you are registering for the program. Our staff work hard to provide hight quality, nutritious meals throughout the week/weekend. If you have any questions regarding the menu, please contact us at the camp office.
YMCA John Island Camp has updated their facilities to composting toilets. Each facility has a rub-a-dub (wash stand) where hands can be washed and dried. All rub-a-dubs are equipped with solar power lights. There is also a centralized shower facility available for use. Families are welcome to use the washing machine during their stay if they encounter any unforeseen accidents.
A more detailed package will be sent to each family before camp starts! This package will include finer details of how you can best prepare for your week/weekend at camp.
