About us 

Manitoulin-Sudbury District Services Board (DSB) is looking for a self-motivated & energetic individual to join our industry-leading organization which works towards the delivery of high-quality services and programs to the residents of Manitoulin-Sudbury districts. Created by the provincial government, the DSB is responsible for overseeing and managing a range of services divested to the municipal order of government, including Ontario Works, Community Housing, Paramedic Services (Land Ambulance), Non-Urgent Patient Transportation, and Early Learning and Child Care Services.

Our Team

The Manitoulin-Sudbury District Services Board is comprised of 14 board members and has been in existence for 25 years. With three main departments, Integrated Human Services, Paramedic Services, and Administration, and over 200 employees, we service a large geographical area totaling 45,000 square km.  Our organization is responsible for the development and execution of annual budgets exceeding $50 million.  We are proud to serve our communities, and we remain committed to our mission of delivering effective, fair, and safe services to our residents.

The Opportunity

We are currently looking for a driven individual to join our team as a Custodian, within our Infrastructure and Asset Management Department.  The position will be based in  Espanola with extensive travel.

The Building Custodian is required to maintain the appearance and cleanliness of the property(s) that are assigned to them.  They are also responsible for minor maintenance as assigned to them through the service request system.

In this position, you help us provide:

  • Cleaning of our building interiors including floors, carpets, walls, windows, hallways, stairwells, common rooms, public washrooms, laundry room, and storage rooms
    Waxing and stripping floors, and shampooing rugs
    Removal of garbage
    Perform unit turnovers in preparation for new tenants
    Snow removal, sanding, and ice removal from parking lot, sidewalks, roofs, and doorways
    Cutting, watering, and fertilizing grass as well as maintaining and cultivating various flower beds, trees, and shrubs
    Cleaning of all outdoor public areas, and exterior common windows
    Ensuring heating, ventilation, and water systems are in good repair
    Operating and ensuring all equipment such as lawn tractors, mowers, and other maintenance equipment are in good repair
    Perform annual smoke detector testing
    Perform maintenance as assigned by the service request system
    Perform monthly generator equipment checks
    Track and maintain the required inventory level of cleaning supplies
    Showing vacant units to prospective tenants
    Participating in move-out and move-in inspections
    Report maintenance issues using the service request system
    Primary contact for on-site contractors
    Investigate tenant complaints, rectifying where possible and reporting problems to the Integrated Human Services Manager
    Conduct monthly Health & Safety site inspections

Qualifications and Specific Skills:

Education: Equivalent of Grade 12, such as trades orientation courses on building maintenance, plus Grade 11.

Experience: 1 to 2 years.  Knowledge of different equipment and tools, building mechanics, safe drinking water regulations, and handling of social problems.

Computer Skills: Knowledge of Office 365 programs such as Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Special Skills:

  • WHMIS certification
    Good working knowledge of various small hand tools
    The ability to work independently and to organize work priorities with a minimum of supervision
    The ability to maintain confidentiality is essential and effectively exercising tact and diplomacy in all communications with building residents and/or the public
    Bilingualism (French/English) is considered an asset
    Valid Ontario Class “G” Drivers License with an insured vehicle for employment-related use

Salary: $27.30/hour (40 hours per week)
