Job Title: Community Services Worker
Reports to: Executive Director
Hours of Work: Full-time (35 hours/week) (Flexible – Evening and Weekend Work Required)
Rate of Pay: $23.00/hour

The Sudbury Workers Education and Advocacy Centre (SWEAC) is an organization of workers, students and community volunteers committed to improving the lives and working conditions of people in low-wage and unstable employment. Our centre delivers support and education on worker’s rights, provides community spaces for workers to share and learn together, and ensures that all workers have a voice at work and are treated with dignity, fairness and respect.
Summary of work areas:
The Community Services Worker is responsible for providing one-on-one client navigation and community support to clients requiring assistance in understanding their rights in the workplace, and navigating systems such as Employment Insurance, WSIB, Ministry of Labour and Ontario Labour Relations Board claims, and Human Rights claim. In addition,the Community Services Worker provides and supports educational opportunities and presentations, providing legal education about workers rights, information regarding the services of the Sudbury Workers Education and Advocacy Centre, and facilitating discussions on worker rights with peer support groups. The Community Services Worker supports our outreach and social event activities, and seeks out allies and community partners to create new opportunities for educational presentations and outreach.
Duties Include:
- Provide client navigation services for workers seeking support to navigate systems such as EI, WSIB, Ministry of Labour Claims
- Provide on-going, one-on-one education and support to participant’s / case work and advocacy with clients
- Make appropriate referrals to other agencies or interventions as required
- Deliver presentations and workshops to various groups in Northeastern Ontario
- Attend appropriate events and promote SWEAC and Decent Work Campaigns
- Lead peer support groups and facilitate conversations within group
- Identify and assist with training volunteers to provide peer support and leadership for workers in community
- Build community connections and capacity within the City of Greater Sudbury specifically with vulnerable workers
- Keep up to date and informed on all Labour Law changes and regulations, and keep up to date and informed on all labour trends
- Support social event activity
Requirements:
- Bilingualism considered an asset
- Valid driver’s license considered an asset, and access to a vehicle a bonus
- Ability to work flexible hours
- Ability to travel long distances (North Bay, Espanalo, Manitoulin, and other locations in Northeastern Ontario.)
- Working knowledge of labour standards considered an asset; but we are interested in candidates who are passionate, with lived experience, who are willing to share and engage
