Language Assessments

If you are a newcomer to Canada and need to learn or improve your English language skills, YMCA NEO Immigrant Services offers language assessment services at no cost to eligible clients.

Eligibility
• 18+ years of age
• Currently resides in the area of Greater Sudbury, with one of the following immigration statuses:
– Canadian Citizens born outside of Canada whose native language is not English
– Permanent Residents
– Convention Refugees/Protected Persons
– Persons in Canada whose applications for Permanent Resident status are being processed in Canada and who have been informed by a letter from Citizenship and Immigration Canada of the initial approval of their application subject to an admissibility assessment
– Refugee claimants
– Temporary workers or students who have obtained initial approval for a concurrent Application for Permanent Residence
– Foreign domestic workers admitted under the Live-In Caregiver program

On the day of your Language Assessment
1. Bring your immigration documents
– Original landing document
– Citizenship Card
– Permanent Resident Card

2. Plan for two to three hours for the assessment
– Assessor will ask you to write, read and speak in English
– You will be provided with your benchmark numbers by the assessor
– You can be referred to a government-funded English language program
